Nine days into our retirement adventure and we have now moved to the sunny-side of the Big Island. The first nine days we stayed in Hilo visiting family and friends. We have been discussing if we could live in this tropical paradise or maybe just winter here, its cold in Iowa!

In a previous story I shared with you my experience of barely surviving a tsunami while in Hilo. I was completely unaware what was to lie ahead! Now on the sunny-side and staying in Kona it was time to hit the beaches! Our first day in Kona however we were greeted with high surf warnings! Our VRBO was directly across from Magic Sands beach and the magic of magic sands is that sometimes there is sand, sometimes not. We saw the most enormous waves crashing into lava rocks on the beach, it was awe inspiring!

Since our retirement adventure had us staying 12 days in Kona we had ample time for the waves and surf to reach a level that an old Iowan could manage, or at least think he could manage! Since the monster warning waves were crashing the first weekend we were there Denise and I had the opportunity to then play in a pickleball tournament. Taking this opportunity for a little bit of self-glossing, my wife and I came in third place in mixed doubles! I will out the part that we played in the novice division and there was only three teams.
